About Sandra D. Lucas:
Sandra D. Lucas is the Deputy Commissioner for the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs. She leads statewide programs that support over 400,000 veterans and their families. With more than 20 years in public service, military leadership, and government, she is known for driving strategic projects and building strong partnerships. She also works to make sure veterans and their families can easily access important services.
Ms. Lucas has held important leadership positions in state government, including working in the Governor’s Office and the Alabama Emergency Management Agency. There, she managed communications and legislative work during emergency responses. She also served in the Alabama Army National Guard, leading public affairs and supporting missions both in the U.S. and abroad.
Ms. Lucas is a dedicated advocate and skilled public speaker. She encourages leadership growth and career advancement for women, and she is committed to mentoring the next generation of leaders in government and the military.
Her work has made public services better, improved how veterans and their families get help, and expanded outreach. She also supports programs that focus on veterans’ well-being, including mental health and suicide prevention.
Ms. Lucas holds a BA in English from American Military University and is completing her Executive MBA at Auburn University. She is also a graduate of the Defense Information School with advanced certifications in acquisition and emergency management.
